Adam Levine Debuts Giant Back Tattoo

Under the sea and onto his back. Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine revealed his huge back tattoo via Instagram on Monday, February 22, and shared with fans that the elaborate ink was part of a gradual process.

"6 months in the making," Levine, 36, wrote. "Thanks @bryanrandolph for absolutely blowing my mind with this one! Woooo hooooo!!!!"

Levine's now-completed tat-sterpiece spans from his neck down to his lower back, from one shoulder to the next. The complex design features a fierce-looking winged mermaid, who cradles a huge skull in her arms. Other key designs include six swallows aligning his ribs, as well as the wheel of a ship at the nape of his neck. The design was completed by San Rafael, California, tattoo artist Bryan Randolph, who's worked with Levine on some of his other tattoos.

In the November 2013 issue of Inked mag, the Voice coach professed his addiction for getting tattoos, and revealed one of his favorites: a Sanskrit word scrawled across his heart.

“The meaning is a little bit loose and can get misinterpreted, but when applied to talking about yoga, it has to do with my fire or determination for the practice,” Levine told the magazine. “It’s a personal thing. That’s kind of why I put it in a place that’s a bit more hidden.”

However, he joked that not all of his tats have meaning, including a string of beads he got across his neck. “I was in Japan and I got this necklace. I’m not sure why I got it — I think I was bored," he explained. "But I like it.”

Levine said he had utmost respect, though, for the artists. “You have to give those guys credit," he told the mag. "They’re probably sick and tired of people screwing around and coming into the shop and not getting anything, so I totally understand the attitude of, ‘Are you wasting my time or are we really going to do this?’”
